Buy a Book

“Every word, image, and action is laden with innumerable potential for meaning. To understand the world we inhabit—and ourselves—we translate our living experiences through both physical and cognitive acts of metaphor, memory, and narrative. This research investigates processes involved in the perception and understanding of visual communications; to discover what happens in those learning experiences at the intersection of image and language. The purpose is to identify the potential for evocative communication to convert visual information into meaningful and memorable learning experiences.” (excerpt, from the back cover)

Due to surprising interest, I have decided to make my first book Metaphor, Memory, and Story available for purchase right here. This book was researched, written, and designed in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The project was undertaken with the help of many people—friends, faculty, classmates—over the course of one year during my studies in Chicago and at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel, Switzerland.

For more information and additional photos of the book’s design, please see my post about it here. More details on the book itself:

  • 7 chapters, 160 pages, perfect bound
  • 70 color illustrations
  • size: 7 3/4″ x 6 7/8″ (format and grid of the book based on proportions of the human hand)
  • Mohawk Smooth Bright White 32 lb text paper
  • Lots of blood, sweat, and tears

The cost per book is $40 USD. Unfortunately, short-run printing is not cheap, and this price is to cover printing and binding alone. Shipping is free within the continental U.S. (no really, it’s on me!). International orders or special instructions, please email me to discuss. Ordering should be easy thanks to paypal, but let me know if there are any problems.

Of course, if you like the book, hate the book, think I’m a liar, a reductionist, or a genius, I would love to hear about it. Please send feedback, rants, accusations, praise, etc. to me via email or leave as comments here.
