The Lady Vanishes

This experiment in geometric abstraction incrementally distorts, and eventually camouflages, the most recognizable image in the Western world. She holds up pretty well though, doesn’t she?
Using a custom tool I made with Processing, I am able to select circles, squares, or triangles of varying scale to distort the image. This application can be applied to any image, which means this is now an ongoing project that will (I hope) one day result in a published series.

I think it already being such a recognizable image helps us still see it even as it becomes distorted. Kind of makes you wonder just how much of what we think we see is simply being filled in by what we expect to see.
Thanks for the comment, cavepainter. You bring up a good point, maybe THE point: How much do we fill in the visual blanks? How much do we actually see?
Also interesting that this particular image held up much better when abstracting with triangles rather than with circles or squares. Probably attributable to DaVinci’s strong use of triangular compositions.
