Typographic Michigan

April 1, 2010

Being a native Michigander, I am full of home state pride and admiration for those two lovely peninsulas surrounded by the appropriately named Great Lakes. It’s a land of vast contrasts both natural and man-made—from the rugged wilderness of the U.P. (that’s Upper Peninsula, for those not in the know) to the modern ruins of a 20th century city found across Detroit.

This woodblock constructed typographic-meets-cartographic composition was photographed in the lobby of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island—another fantastic and totally Michigan place. I have no idea who made it or why. Of course, it instantly tugged on my dual heart strings of design geekenss and Michigan-love. I have to wonder if this was ever inked and printed before its retirement into the elegant grandeur of its present home. That’s poster I would love to hang on the wall, even more so than this typographic tribute to the Great Lakes.
